Forgetting a name during a busy day can be unsettling, especially when a relative has dementia. A single lapse does not establish a diagnosis. The more useful questions are whether there is a persistent change and whether it affects everyday tasks, communication or safety.
Age alone cannot explain every cognitive change
Sleep, hearing, mood, medicines and medical conditions can affect thinking. The 2024 Lancet dementia Commission brings together evidence on risk across the life course, including vascular health, hearing and vision. It does not provide a self-diagnosis checklist or mean every difficulty is caused by lifestyle.
The Commission estimates a substantial potentially preventable or delayable fraction at population level. That is not a personal promise, and risk factors interact with circumstances people cannot fully control. Dementia is never proof someone failed to eat or exercise correctly. Diagnosis requires the appropriate clinical process.
Notice a pattern, not just a score
Ask for medical advice about worsening memory, difficulty with familiar tasks or changes noticed by someone close to you. Sudden confusion, facial weakness or speech problems need urgent assessment, not an online brain-age test. A reassuring wearable result cannot exclude a neurological or other medical problem.
- Record concrete examples of the change.
- Include sleep, medicines and hearing concerns.
- Seek clinical assessment rather than guessing.
- Maintain supportive routines without blaming yourself.
Zhen can support movement, nutrition and everyday habits alongside healthcare. The Longevity MOT is not a cognitive diagnostic assessment and cannot establish or rule out dementia. Its role is to clarify practical physical priorities, while questions about memory receive the right professional attention.
Putting this into practice at Zhen
At Zhen Wellness in Onchan, Isle of Man, we help you turn health information into realistic next steps. The £97 Longevity MOT is a standalone 60-minute assessment of your history, priorities, posture, mobility and body composition estimates, with pain mapping where relevant. It is not a biological-age blood test, medical diagnosis or prediction of lifespan. Any further service is chosen separately around your needs, with costs discussed before you decide.
