An expensive facial routine cannot make sun protection irrelevant. Visible skin ageing includes changes related to repeated ultraviolet exposure as well as time. The useful aim is to reduce avoidable damage while choosing skincare and treatments with realistic expectations, not to stop every natural change.

A trial lasting years, not just a product launch

Hughes and colleagues studied daily versus discretionary sunscreen use in an Australian community trial. In the skin-ageing analysis, regular use reduced measured progression over four and a half years. This was a clinical comparison of surface skin changes, not proof of whole-body age reversal. The population and Australian setting also limit direct numerical predictions for Isle of Man residents.

The study also tested beta-carotene supplementation and did not find an overall skin-ageing benefit. That makes it a useful reminder that a supplement marketed as an antioxidant cannot automatically substitute for protection. Missing outcome data and limited power for some effects were acknowledged.

Protection is more than a cream

NHS advice combines shade, clothing and suitable sunscreen, including at least SPF 30 and good UVA protection. Apply enough and reapply appropriately, especially after swimming or sweating. Cool air or wind is not a measurement of UV exposure. Walking, gardening and other ordinary outdoor activities can still require protection.

  • Keep sunscreen accessible, not just in a holiday bag.
  • Include commonly missed exposed areas.
  • Use shade and clothing too.
  • Get changing or unusual skin lesions assessed.

Zhen can discuss suitable cosmetic skin support, but a facial or radiofrequency course does not cancel UV damage or replace medical assessment. Better protection can sit alongside a simple, comfortable routine and treatments chosen for specific goals.
