The MIND diet, a dietary pattern derived from the Mediterranean and DASH diets and optimised for brain health through epidemiological analysis, found that adults with the highest adherence were 53 percent less likely to develop Alzheimer's disease over the study period. Even moderate adherence was associated with a 35 percent reduction. The MIND diet is built predominantly from plant foods: dark leafy greens, berries, nuts, whole grains, beans, and olive oil, with fish twice weekly.
The Mechanisms of Dietary Brain Protection
- Vascular health: the brain receives 20 percent of cardiac output; vascular disease reduces cerebral blood flow and is the primary driver of vascular dementia; plant-based diets that reduce blood pressure, LDL cholesterol, and arterial stiffness directly protect cerebral perfusion
- Neuroinflammation reduction: polyphenols from berries, olive oil, and dark leafy greens reduce brain neuroinflammation, which is a primary driver of both Alzheimer's pathology and cognitive decline
- Gut-brain axis: gut microbiome composition influences brain function through vagal nerve signalling, short-chain fatty acid production, and systemic inflammatory burden; plant fibre diversity protects the microbiome composition that supports brain health
- BDNF support: plant polyphenols, particularly those from blueberries and dark chocolate, increase brain-derived neurotrophic factor, which supports neuroplasticity and memory consolidation
