Kidney disease is one situation where otherwise healthy food advice can need adaptation. A bowl of beans or a green smoothie may be appropriate for one person and unsuitable in that form for another.

What the research found

The 2024 KDIGO kidney guideline advises healthy, diverse diets with more plant-based than animal-based foods and fewer ultra-processed foods. It also calls for qualified renal dietary advice about sodium, phosphorus, potassium and protein tailored to individual needs and disease severity. This is not evidence that a general vegan plan restores kidney function or suits every stage of CKD.

Blood results, medicines, nutritional status and the stage of disease affect advice. Do not assume every plant food must be avoided because it contains potassium, or that all restrictions can be removed because the food is natural. Both blanket rules can create problems.

Work from your renal plan

Ask which restrictions apply to you and why, then discuss suitable portions, preparation and protein choices with a renal dietitian. Check food additives where relevant. Avoid self-prescribed very-low-protein diets, potassium-based salt substitutes or concentrated supplements. Enough energy and nutrition still matter.

  • Use your own blood results and clinical advice.
  • Clarify restrictions rather than guessing.
  • Seek qualified renal dietary support.

Zhen can help with practical implementation where appropriate, but does not prescribe renal treatment diets. A body composition report cannot assess kidney filtration or replace laboratory monitoring and nephrology care.

About the evidence and your safety

Sources checked 14 October 2026. NutritionFacts.org informed topic discovery; original research and clinical guidance were checked separately. This is independently written education, not an endorsement by NutritionFacts.org, individual medical advice or evidence of Zhen treatment outcomes. Never stop prescribed treatment. A fully plant-based diet needs reliable vitamin B12 and appropriate nutritional planning; children, pregnancy and medical conditions need individual advice.
