Depression can make shopping, cooking and regular eating difficult. Useful food advice should reduce that burden, not suggest that symptoms reflect a failure to eat correctly.
What the research found
SMILES randomised 67 adults with major depression to dietary support or matched social support for 12 weeks. Depression scores improved more with the dietary programme, and many participants continued medicines or psychotherapy. The diet was modified Mediterranean-style and included animal foods. It supports investigation of diet as an adjunct, not proof that a vegan diet cures depression or that supplements replace mental-health care.
The trial was small and involved seven consultations with a clinical dietitian. Its findings cannot be assigned to one ingredient or to a different programme with less support. The food pattern, contact and selected study population matter when interpreting the result.
Start with the easiest adequate meal
A familiar meal with suitable protein, vegetables and a satisfying starch may be more achievable than a new recipe every day. Convenient options can help. Plant-based choices can fit a balanced plan, but food rules should not worsen guilt or replace treatment that is helping.
- Keep mental-health treatment.
- Use practical, low-effort meals.
- Ask for help when intake becomes difficult.
If you feel at risk of harming yourself, seek urgent help from emergency services or your clinical team. Zhen can support habits within scope, not diagnose depression, provide psychiatric treatment or guarantee mood recovery through diet.
