Tiredness is not a reliable iron test. If you feel unusually fatigued or breathless, a diet change should not replace assessment. Plant-based eating can provide iron, but it needs deliberate planning.
What the research found
NHS guidance describes iron-deficiency anaemia as a condition requiring investigation of the cause and appropriate treatment, often including prescribed iron. Iron-rich foods support that plan. This is clinical guidance, not proof that a particular plant food corrects established anaemia alone. Blood loss and other medical factors may matter as much as intake.
Plant iron is non-haem iron, and absorption depends on the overall meal and the person's needs. Vitamin-C-rich foods can support absorption. These principles do not mean a smoothie can replace prescribed treatment, particularly when the underlying cause has not been identified.
Use meals to support the clinical plan
Suitable beans, lentils, tofu and iron-fortified foods offer options. Include an appropriate vitamin-C-rich fruit or vegetable with meals where possible. Check labels and avoid guessing that a supplement is safe because it is natural. A balanced plan should protect protein, B12 and other nutrients as well as iron.
- Seek testing for suspected deficiency.
- Follow prescribed treatment.
- Investigate the cause, not only the menu.
Marked breathlessness, chest symptoms or significant deterioration needs prompt care. Zhen can support practical meal choices, but a Longevity MOT or body composition report cannot diagnose anaemia or explain unexplained blood loss.

About the evidence and your safety
Sources checked 14 October 2026. NutritionFacts.org informed topic discovery; original research and clinical guidance were checked separately. This is independently written education, not an endorsement by NutritionFacts.org, individual medical advice or evidence of Zhen treatment outcomes. Never stop prescribed treatment. A fully plant-based diet needs reliable vitamin B12 and appropriate nutritional planning; children, pregnancy and medical conditions need individual advice.
