A practical food option can be welcome when constipation makes daily life uncomfortable. Kiwifruit research is more useful than a vague claim that fruit cleanses the gut because it measured specific bowel outcomes.

What the research found

An international randomised crossover study tested two green kiwifruits daily against psyllium over four-week periods. Participants with functional constipation or constipation-predominant IBS reported improved complete spontaneous bowel movements and digestive comfort with kiwifruit. This was not a trial of every bowel disorder or fruit extract. Zespri sponsored the research, which is relevant when assessing confidence and independent replication.

The trial used green kiwifruit and defined intake and follow-up. It cannot guarantee that every individual, another variety or a supplement receives the same benefit. IBS with diarrhoea is not the same condition as IBS-C, and persistent symptoms should not be assumed to be harmless constipation.

Consider the whole routine

If suitable and enjoyable, fruit can form part of a gradual, balanced approach alongside appropriate fluids and movement. Avoid kiwi if you have a relevant allergy. Existing laxative plans or special diets may affect what is appropriate; do not discontinue treatment because a trial found a food benefit.

  • Track comfort as well as frequency.
  • Introduce changes gradually.
  • Keep prescribed bowel care.

Blood in the stool, unexplained weight loss, persistent change in bowel habit or severe abdominal symptoms needs assessment. Zhen can help make food habits manageable but cannot diagnose the cause of constipation or reproduce a clinical trial's results.
