Plant foods can be nutritious and still cause symptoms in a particular portion or person. An IBS plan should address that reality without turning normal foods into enemies or making meals unnecessarily narrow.

What the research found

NICE recommends expert dietary advice when IBS persists despite general measures, including consideration of an exclusion approach such as low FODMAP. That is not a recommendation for everyone to avoid a long list of plant foods. Clinical guidance supports tailored management; it does not establish that a vegan diet alone cures IBS or that every trigger must be excluded permanently.

FODMAPs are fermentable carbohydrates, not a measure of how morally healthy a food is. Tolerance can depend on portions and combinations. A restrictive plan needs appropriate assessment, review and nutritional planning, especially if another exclusion, such as vegan eating, is already in place.

Protect variety and adequacy

An appropriately trained dietitian can help choose tolerated protein sources, suitable grains and vegetables while planning B12 and other nutrients. Do not assume you must remove every bean, fruit or wholegrain forever. A useful diary records amounts and symptoms without encouraging anxious, constant food checking.

  • Seek appropriate specialist advice.
  • Avoid stacking exclusions without review.
  • Keep protein and nutrient needs in view.

Diagnostic questions, including possible coeliac disease, should be addressed before starting exclusions that affect testing. Zhen can offer practical support alongside a clinical plan, not replace specialist therapeutic-diet care.
