Being told to eat more fibre can be frustrating when it increases discomfort. IBS is one reason the type, amount and pace of change matter more than chasing the biggest fibre number.

What the research found

A 275-person randomised trial compared psyllium, bran and placebo in IBS. Psyllium improved adequate symptom relief during the first two months. Early withdrawal was more common with bran, often because symptoms worsened. NICE guidance distinguishes soluble fibre, including oats or ispaghula, from insoluble bran. This does not mean every high-fibre food suits every person with IBS.

The trial tested specific fibre interventions, not a whole vegan diet. Symptom relief was not identical for every outcome or participant. New or concerning bowel symptoms need assessment, and an IBS label should not be used to overlook another condition.

Find what is tolerable

Keep a simple record of meals and symptoms, and discuss fibre changes with an appropriate professional. Suitable oats may be an option, while suddenly adding large amounts of bran or beans may not help. If using a fibre product, follow its instructions and professional advice rather than copying a trial dose.

  • Change one thing at a time.
  • Consider fibre type, not just quantity.
  • Avoid unnecessary permanent restrictions.

Blood in stool, weight loss or persistent unexplained symptoms requires medical assessment. Zhen can help with a manageable routine, but a specialist IBS diet should be guided by someone with appropriate dietary expertise.
