A diabetes diagnosis does not mean all carbohydrate foods are interchangeable. Beans, wholegrains, vegetables and sugary drinks have different nutritional profiles. A planned plant-based approach is one option for improving meals.
What the research found
A 74-week randomised trial compared a low-fat vegan diet with conventional diabetes-diet advice in 99 people. Both groups improved weight and lipids. The overall HbA1c difference was not statistically significant; analyses accounting for medication changes favoured the vegan intervention for some outcomes. The trial did not establish that complications were prevented or that everyone could stop diabetes treatment.
NutritionFacts highlights these trials, but the medication-adjusted and unadjusted findings need distinguishing. Participants received structured support, and the study compared specific diets rather than every possible diabetes plan. Promising results cannot be turned into a cure claim or a forecast for an individual.
Plan food and treatment together
Try a balanced meal with an appropriate pulse portion, vegetables and a suitable starch. Review drinks, portion patterns and the meals you find hardest to manage. Changes in intake can affect glucose readings, so anyone using glucose-lowering medicines needs an agreed monitoring and adjustment plan with their medical team.
- Keep prescribed treatment.
- Choose an achievable meal change.
- Discuss glucose monitoring before major changes.
Repeated low readings, symptoms of hypoglycaemia or feeling unwell require appropriate clinical action. Zhen's practical nutrition support does not diagnose diabetes, prescribe medicines or replace diabetes education and care.
