Ulcerative colitis is not simply an unhappy gut that needs more fibre. It is a medical condition with different dietary needs at different times. Research on a quiet phase should be read in that context.

What the research found

A 2023 randomised trial in 28 adults with ulcerative colitis in remission compared a Mediterranean pattern with habitual diet for 12 weeks. It reported favourable differences in a stool inflammation marker and microbiome measures. The study was small, and its diet was not entirely vegan. It did not show that plant foods replace medication or treat a severe active flare.

Changes in stool calprotectin or gut microbes are useful research findings, but they are not the same as a guarantee against future flares, admissions or surgery. Food choices also need to consider appetite, nutrition, symptoms and any complications.

Build variety within your clinical plan

Where suitable, a plant-rich pattern can include vegetables, pulses, wholegrains and appropriate fats. Preparation and texture may affect comfort. During worsening symptoms, follow your IBD team's advice rather than automatically adding large amounts of rough fibre or following a cleansing protocol.

  • Keep prescribed IBD treatment.
  • Review changes with your clinical team.
  • Avoid claiming a microbiome result is a cure.

Bleeding, dehydration, fever or significant worsening may need prompt medical care. Zhen can support manageable eating habits, while therapeutic diets and disease monitoring remain with appropriate healthcare professionals.
