Plant-based describes where ingredients come from, not whether a meal meets your needs. A vegan biscuit and a bean soup can both qualify, while offering very different amounts of fibre, protein and energy.

What the research found

In Hall's small inpatient crossover trial, 20 adults ate more energy and gained weight during the ultra-processed-menu period compared with the unprocessed period. Food was offered freely, and each period lasted two weeks. The trial was not a vegan-diet study. It shows that food pattern and processing can influence intake under those conditions, not that every packaged plant food is harmful.

The trial cannot isolate every processing feature or predict every product's effect. Fortified plant milks, frozen vegetables and tinned pulses can be useful, accessible foods. Blanket avoidance of packaging may make a diet more expensive and difficult without reflecting what was actually tested.

Look at the meal, not the marketing

Build satisfying meals around appropriate protein, fibre-rich foods and enjoyable flavours. Compare portions and ingredients in snacks or ready meals. Convenience can help adherence; the aim is not to cook everything from scratch. If you are consistently hungry, review meal adequacy rather than assuming you need more willpower.

  • Keep useful convenience foods.
  • Read beyond the vegan logo.
  • Plan regular, satisfying meals.

Frequent guilt or compensatory restriction around food deserves support, not stricter rules. Zhen can discuss a practical eating pattern without claiming that a processing category diagnoses the cause of anyone's weight or health condition.
