A colourful diet can still lack an essential nutrient. Vitamin B12 deserves particular attention in fully plant-based eating, and symptoms should not be dismissed as a normal part of ageing.
What the research found
NHS guidance describes B12 deficiency as a possible cause of neurological symptoms including numbness, weakness, balance problems and cognitive changes, sometimes without anaemia. Delayed treatment can leave lasting problems. NutritionFacts also emphasises a reliable B12 source for plant-based diets. This is deficiency prevention and clinical guidance, not proof that all brain fog or foot symptoms are caused by B12.
Ordinary unfortified plant foods are not a dependable B12 plan. Deficiency can also occur for reasons other than diet, including absorption problems. New neurological symptoms need assessment of the cause rather than self-diagnosis from a food diary.
Make provision reliable
Use appropriate fortified foods and/or supplementation with advice suited to your circumstances. Check labels rather than assuming a plant milk or nutritional yeast contains B12. If deficiency is suspected or established, your clinician decides the investigation and treatment; a standard prevention routine may not address an absorption problem.
- Check your reliable B12 source.
- Seek assessment for neurological symptoms.
- Follow prescribed deficiency treatment.
Zhen can help with nutritional planning, but gait analysis, a foot-arch check or a body composition report cannot diagnose B12 deficiency or rule out other causes of numbness.
