Prediabetes can sound like a warning with no clear next step. One useful question is the quality of the carbohydrates you regularly eat, rather than assuming every starch must disappear.
What the research found
A large Lancet review combined prospective observational studies and dietary trials on carbohydrate quality. Higher fibre and wholegrain intake was associated with lower rates of conditions including type 2 diabetes. Trials supported improvements in some risk markers. The disease-incidence associations were not randomised proof that one food prevents diabetes, and individual risk depends on more than diet.
Wholegrain foods and pulses bring fibre and other nutrients; refined products differ. Still, observational findings can reflect other habits and circumstances. A food swap should support an overall plan that includes appropriate activity and medical follow-up, not become a promise that a diagnosis can never develop.
Choose one repeatable improvement
Try an appropriate wholegrain breakfast or bread, add beans to a meal, or replace a sugary drink with a suitable unsweetened option. Change gradually if you are not used to fibre. An expensive low-carb product is not automatically a better choice than an ordinary balanced meal.
- Compare fibre on labels.
- Keep meals satisfying.
- Attend recommended medical reviews.
A body composition score cannot diagnose prediabetes or confirm its resolution. People taking medicines or following a specialist diet need tailored advice. Zhen can help turn agreed priorities into food habits that fit everyday life.
