With red-light therapy, wavelength is only part of the description. The amount of light reaching tissue, distance, exposure time and body area also matter. A panel labelled red or near infrared cannot borrow every result from every study using a similar colour.
The research method matters
A 2024 scoping review examined photobiomodulation alongside resistance exercise in older adults. The studies varied in device, protocol and outcome, and many used targeted muscle treatment rather than a whole-room LED session. These findings cannot establish that Zhen's exact room produces the same effect or slows overall ageing.
Zhen's panels use 660 nm red and 850 nm near-infrared light. They are not UV tanning lamps and not infrared sauna heaters. Nor does a scoping review establish the ideal dose for every client. More time is not necessarily a better intervention, and an unfamiliar high-output device should not be treated as interchangeable with a tested protocol.
Ask questions before combining activities
Yoga, gentle movement or meditation can have their own purposes, but their benefits do not prove that doing them under light creates an additional effect. There is no established evidence here that an active red-light room is superior to a red-light bed. UV sunbeds are a separate comparison and carry different risks.
- Ask about the actual device and protocol.
- Follow screening and eye-safety instructions.
- Disclose medicines and relevant medical conditions.
- Do not extend sessions to chase a bigger response.
The Red Room may be considered as an adjunct where appropriate, with clear expectations. It does not replace active exercise, adequate nutrition or medical care. At Zhen, it is more helpful to discuss the outcome you want than to assume light exposure is a universal anti-ageing tool.
Putting this into practice at Zhen
At Zhen Wellness in Onchan, Isle of Man, we help you turn health information into realistic next steps. The £97 Longevity MOT is a standalone 60-minute assessment of your history, priorities, posture, mobility and body composition estimates, with pain mapping where relevant. It is not a biological-age blood test, medical diagnosis or prediction of lifespan. Any further service is chosen separately around your needs, with costs discussed before you decide.
