One test says you are younger than your birthday; another says older. That does not necessarily mean one laboratory made a mistake. Ageing clocks are built using different data and different targets. Their disagreement can reveal a limitation of the measurement rather than a sudden change in your body.

A clock is a statistical model

Some models are trained mainly to estimate chronological age. Others incorporate relationships with clinical markers or mortality. DunedinPACE was designed around the rate of change in multiple physiological systems over time. These are distinct questions. A result expressed as years and a result expressed as pace should not be compared as though they use the same ruler.

CALERIE provides a useful real example. Its randomised dietary intervention produced a small effect on DunedinPACE, but not significant changes in PhenoAge or GrimAge estimates. The study did not conclude that all clocks had reset. Selecting only the favourable score would make the evidence appear stronger and more consistent than it was.

What to ask before paying for a test

Ask which model is used, what it was validated against, how repeatable it is and whether the result changes a sensible clinical decision. Consider laboratory variation and the population in which the model was developed. A precise-looking decimal can conceal substantial uncertainty. A commercial age score does not override established medical assessments.

  • Keep the test method consistent for comparisons.
  • Request an explanation of uncertainty.
  • Avoid changing medicines because of an age score.
  • Track practical function alongside any biomarker.

The Longevity MOT is not sold as one of these blood-based clocks. It creates a practical starting point for mobility, posture, body composition estimates and goals. An easier walk or better strength can be worthwhile even if a commercial ageing score barely changes.

Putting this into practice at Zhen

At Zhen Wellness in Onchan, Isle of Man, we help you turn health information into realistic next steps. The £97 Longevity MOT is a standalone 60-minute assessment of your history, priorities, posture, mobility and body composition estimates, with pain mapping where relevant. It is not a biological-age blood test, medical diagnosis or prediction of lifespan. Any further service is chosen separately around your needs, with costs discussed before you decide.
