If genes were the entire story, people with similar inherited risks would have identical health. They do not. Epigenetics helps explain how cells regulate genetic information, but the word is often stretched into promises that every illness can be switched off by lifestyle. The science is more interesting, and more complicated, than that.
Think regulation, not a rewritten instruction book
DNA methylation is one form of chemical marking used in gene regulation. Researchers measure patterns at selected sites to build ageing biomarkers. These patterns can be associated with age and health, but a methylation measurement does not directly show whether a specific organ works well. It is also not a comprehensive reading of every gene.
The 2023 Hallmarks of Aging review describes epigenetic alterations alongside other processes, including genomic instability, cellular senescence and changes in communication between cells. This is a biological framework drawing on different kinds of research. It is not a clinical trial proving that one lifestyle intervention repairs all those processes.
Can everyday habits change the picture?
In the CALERIE trial, a secondary analysis found a small change in one pace-of-ageing measure after calorie restriction, but not significant changes in other biological-age clocks. That is evidence of a measurable response, not proof that the participants became younger in every sense. Long-term disease and survival outcomes still need study.
- Use epigenetic results as a discussion, not a diagnosis.
- Do not blame yourself for inherited disease.
- Prioritise habits with human health evidence.
- Avoid products promising to reset every cell.
Food, activity and recovery can matter without being described as gene switches. At Zhen, practical assessment focuses on what you can do and what support you need. Your history and symptoms remain important even when a fashionable test produces a reassuring number.
Putting this into practice at Zhen
At Zhen Wellness in Onchan, Isle of Man, we help you turn health information into realistic next steps. The £97 Longevity MOT is a standalone 60-minute assessment of your history, priorities, posture, mobility and body composition estimates, with pain mapping where relevant. It is not a biological-age blood test, medical diagnosis or prediction of lifespan. Any further service is chosen separately around your needs, with costs discussed before you decide.
