Following a conversation becomes harder when hearing is reduced. That can affect confidence and participation, even before anyone thinks about brain health. Hearing support deserves attention for these everyday benefits. Claims about slowing cognitive decline need a more careful explanation.
What ACHIEVE found
The ACHIEVE trial randomised 977 older adults with untreated hearing loss to hearing intervention or health education. Across the full study group, cognitive change over three years did not differ significantly. A prespecified analysis found a different pattern in participants from an existing cardiovascular cohort, who had a higher baseline risk of cognitive decline.
That higher-risk group's result is important, but it should not replace the main overall finding in a headline. The study does not establish that hearing aids prevent dementia for everyone. Participants were older adults with defined hearing loss, not all people experiencing occasional difficulty in noisy rooms.
Do not wait for a dementia concern to address hearing
A hearing assessment can help establish what is happening and what support is suitable. Practical changes such as reducing background noise and making conversations easier can help participation. If a family member appears forgetful, hearing difficulty may be one issue worth assessing alongside other possibilities, not an alternative diagnosis to assume.
- Mention hearing concerns at a health review.
- Ask about an appropriate hearing assessment.
- Make conversations accessible and unhurried.
- Do not ignore persistent cognitive change.
Zhen does not diagnose hearing loss or provide audiology. We can discuss accessible movement and habits as part of a wider plan, while hearing questions go to the appropriate service. Good healthy-ageing support recognises those boundaries rather than trying to provide every answer itself.
Putting this into practice at Zhen
At Zhen Wellness in Onchan, Isle of Man, we help you turn health information into realistic next steps. The £97 Longevity MOT is a standalone 60-minute assessment of your history, priorities, posture, mobility and body composition estimates, with pain mapping where relevant. It is not a biological-age blood test, medical diagnosis or prediction of lifespan. Any further service is chosen separately around your needs, with costs discussed before you decide.
