Connection can become harder after bereavement, illness, hearing changes or a move. Telling someone to be more social is rarely enough. Healthy-ageing advice should recognise the practical barriers and the value of enjoyable contact, without implying loneliness is a personal failure.
What risk research can tell us
The 2024 Lancet dementia Commission includes social isolation among modifiable risk factors. Much of the relevant evidence concerns associations and population-level estimates. It does not prove that joining a particular class prevents dementia or establish a required number of friends. Changes in health may also affect participation, making the relationship complex.
Connection should therefore not be sold as a guaranteed brain treatment. Its everyday value can include belonging, conversation and opportunities for shared activity. Hearing, vision, transport and accessible environments may be just as important as motivation. Some people prefer a small amount of meaningful contact to a busy timetable.
Make participation easier, not more demanding
A regular call, shared walk or familiar group may be a starting point if it suits you. Physical pain or low confidence can make leaving home difficult, so movement support may have an indirect practical role. That is different from claiming a bodywork treatment changes dementia risk.
- Choose contact you genuinely enjoy.
- Consider hearing and mobility barriers.
- Start small and allow changes in energy.
- Seek support if low mood or isolation is persistent.
Zhen can help with physical goals and realistic habits around daily life. It is not a mental-health crisis service or a dementia-prevention guarantee. Better access to enjoyable activity can be worthwhile without needing a dramatic claim about what it does to an ageing brain.
Putting this into practice at Zhen
At Zhen Wellness in Onchan, Isle of Man, we help you turn health information into realistic next steps. The £97 Longevity MOT is a standalone 60-minute assessment of your history, priorities, posture, mobility and body composition estimates, with pain mapping where relevant. It is not a biological-age blood test, medical diagnosis or prediction of lifespan. Any further service is chosen separately around your needs, with costs discussed before you decide.
